Athame Making Journey

Craft your own Ritual Blade.

This five-day journey offers the opportunity to create a ritual blade that is both crafted and consecrated through your own hands and intention.

Working with fire, steel, and the rhythm of the forge, you will shape a blade that carries not only the marks of the hammer, but also the energy and purpose you bring to its making. You will use your own life force to work the steel, there is nothing more powerful than that.

Every little part of the creation process will be deeply thought-through and felt. Everything will carry meaning. This process will not just shape the steel but you as a witch or a wizard.

By the end of the course, you will hold a knife in your hands that can strengthen your rituals or accompany you while foraging herbs for your practice.

This blade will become an extension of you.

Through out the creation process we will be alchemizing spirit into matter.

It is all about the intention.

I will guide you through the process.

What is an Athame to you?

What is your intended use for it?

Does it cut away?

Will it persuade?

Does it define the line?

Does it cut through from one spirit realm to another?

Does it open or close?

Will you make the blade on the week of the Dark moon or under the Full?

Every step of the creation process is a ritual. Every step carries our intention.

Not only because we work with a form of alchemy and engage with all the elements, but because we seek to create a knife that carries its own power. Powers that will be of support to your own ritual practise.

We will light the fire with prayers. We will cleanse the space with salty water that we collect from the sea.

We will create sigils for your intentions and paint them with seawater on the anvil and tools.

We will turn the forge into a shrine for the elements.

We will weave in your dreams and listen to higher guidance throughout the process.

We will hide little meaningful secrets in your dagger that strengthen its power, and that only you, I, and the spirit of the forge will know of.

We will make this process yours, so that the knife will be yours and become an extension of your powers.

I am David, your Guide in making an Athame.

I live and work in Porthyrhyd, nestled within an old dairy farmhouse where the Welsh countryside breathes into my practice. Alongside my dog Loki, I have reclaimed an old barn as my forge: a sacred space for workshops, lessons, and the manifestation of custom commissions.

Currently I am completing my Master of Fine Art at UWTSD Swansea University (June 2026), a journey undertaken to crystallise my identity as an artist in my own right.

Though my roots began in a Christian landscape, I have walked back to the old ways; I am a Pagan, my spirit firmly tethered to the soil and the raw elements.

As a Blacksmith, I view the anvil as an altar where esoteric study meets the physical world. For me, art is magic given form, and with every strike of the hammer, the connection between my artistic practice and the deeper mysteries grows more profound.

Within this practice, the making of ritual blades—particularly athames—holds a special place. The process becomes a journey in itself: shaping steel through fire and hammer while inviting intention, symbolism, and personal meaning into the work.

Creating your own Ritual Blade will transform and deepen your relationship to your own practise and strengths.

Five Days at the Forge

This journey will take place over five days and four nights. I will pick you up from Carmarthen train station and bring you to my small, cozy home.

For the duration of this journey you will be my guest. I live a simple life with my dog Loki in a little house beside my forge and the ruins of an old farm. Wales is a rainy land of wild trees and beautiful coasts, and its landscape will hold and accompany us throughout this time.

I will take care of food and drinks, including water, coffee, and tea. There will be a simple and delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will have your own small room with a very cozy bed, and there will be a shared bathroom.

I will ask you to bring a few personal items, pieces of metal, bones, or other meaningful objects, that can become part of your dagger. I will also provide steel and other materials from my forge so that you can create a blade that is truly your own.

The making of your blade is not fixed to any one practice and each blade journey is as unique as the practitioner making it.

Experiences from the Forge

“Creating my own ritual knife has been one of the most profound journeys of my life. It has shaped me in ways I couldn’t put into words. The moment I held it in my hands, I thought, “I have to further grow into the witch who uses this knife.” That’s how powerful it felt. There are so many little hidden secrets in this blade. Each ingredient was custom-tailored to my own being, and some of it revealed itself during the creation itself.

Hitting the hot metal was one of my favorite parts. I could feel the transaction, the limits of my own power. It worked me in all the right ways.

David is the loveliest person—such a wise being who holds deep knowledge of everything magical. He has a soft power and immense strength at the same time. The conversations at the kitchen table felt just as important as the space held in the forge.

The rituals I did with my Knife are just beyond words. I cannot share too much. Just want to say: It is powerful!

I highly recommend it. “
